For years, Jimmie Johnson has battled to gain respect from his peers, but with his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup title, Jimmie Johnson has finally earned a mention alongside the top mathletes and chess champions that this world has ever known.
Johnson’s historic victory on Sunday propelled him into the national spotlight and will join legendary drum major Andrew Hershberg, that hot dog-eating Kobayashi guy and four-time National Spelling Bee champion Stanley Billings on the figurative Mt. Rushmore of people that compete in things but should probably not be considered athletes.
“You grow up idolizing these legends as a kid,” Johnson said on Tuesday. “Just to be mentioned in the same sentence as the late Andrew Hershberg or the 1972 champion Haddon Heights cheerleading squad is a complete honor.”
